In this article, we will walk through the thoughts, plans, feelings and emotions of starting this business. Get ready for this thrilling adventure!
Defining My Business Idea
I didn't plan on starting my business this year. I knew it was the goal to open eventually but I felt such a strong calling to open straight after school so I went against the advice of others around me to open. I was lucky to find a location that could provide me a space to open with little overhead. I had all my products that I had been buying throughout school. I have my community around me that has been supporting my fitness career that I felt like I could make this dream a reality. I saw the possibility for a space that people could go to feel comfortable and safe to recieve various beauty services. I want to provide that place. I want to be that beautician.
Crafting a Business Plan
During school I had taken not only our classes provided but I also went out to seek out other knowledge to set me apart from the other graduates. I am such a nerd when it comes to the body that I so desperately wanted to dive deeper and have a better understanding of what we are doing and why so that I could provide clients with the best care possible.
From there, I created my business plan. From previous job experiance I've seen first hand the difference between businesses with a business plan vs businesses without. If you want to succeed in this world the behind the scenes administrative work cannot be ignored.
For reference: a solid business plan typically includes:
Executive Summary: A brief overview of your business and its goals.
Market Analysis: Insights into your target audience and competitors.
Organization and Management: Details about your business structure and team.
Marketing Strategy: Your plan for attracting and retaining customers.
Financial Projections: Estimates for revenue and expenses to track your financial health.
According to a study by the Small Business Administration, businesses with a formal plan are 16% more likely to succeed. I am so motivated to give myself and my business the best chance of survival so this was mandatory to building my business.
Choosing a Business Structure
Choosing your business’s legal structure is crucial. It impacts taxes, liability, and how you manage your business. Common structures include:
Sole Proprietorship: Simple setup with full control, but you are personally liable for debts.
Partnership: Shared ownership allows for shared responsibilities and resources.
LLC (Limited Liability Company): Offers liability protection and can benefit small businesses.
PC (Professional Corporation): A corporation established under state law specifically for licensed professionals.
Corporation: More complex, this structure provides liability protection and potential tax benefits.
This was tricky for me. I met with several different professionals as well as business coaches to deeper understand what would be my best structure for my current and future goals. I spent hours on this topic alone. If you are considering opening I suggest you weigh the pros and cons of each option to decide which fits your vision. An LLC, for example, might offer the right balance of flexibility and protection for many new entrepreneurs.
Registering Your Business
Once you've settled on a business structure, it’s time to register your business officially. This process varies based on your location and business type, but it typically involves:
Choosing and registering your business name.
Applying for necessary permits and licenses for your industry.
Obtaining your Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS.
Proper registration is vital for legal operations and builds trust with your customers. For instance, failure to register your business might limit your customer base due to lack of credibility.
Building Your Brand
With your business structure established, focus on building a recognizable brand that connects with your audience. For mw- I knew my business name before I ever went to school. I designed my logo the week before school ever started. However, branding is not just your logo; it's the entire experience you provide.
Consider these elements:
Brand Name: Choose a memorable name that resonates with your mission.
Logo and Visuals: Design a logo that visually communicates your brand's message.
Tone and Personality: Decide how you'll communicate with your customers. Is it friendly, formal, or playful?
My whole professional life I have been walking the line of playful and friendly. I love it. I feel like it shows my personality and helps people get to know me. With this business- with so much at stake- I need to lean into more formal while still being playful and friendly. The formal is to show I am knowledgable and trustworthy. The friendly and playful is so I stay true to myself and the persona I want to project to people. This is important because a compelling brand helps set you apart from competitors and fosters customer loyalty. For example, companies with strong brands can experience up to a 23% increase in revenue.
Marketing Your Business
Marketing is vital to attracting customers and growing your business. In today's world, there are countless ways to promote your products or services. Here are some effective strategies:
Website Development: A clean, user-friendly website or app serves as your online store.
Social Media: The importance of social media cannot be ignored. If you don't "like it" get over it. This is the direction marketing is going and resistance will only delay your success.
SEO Optimization: Utilize SEO techniques to increase your online visibility and drive organic traffic.
Networking: Attend local business events, workshops, and seminars to forge connections with other entrepreneurs and potential customers.
Combining online and offline strategies can help you reach more people and expand your audience.
Scaling Your Business
After launching, start thinking about how to grow your business. These strategies can aid in scaling:
Expanding Product Lines: Add complementary products or services based on customer feedback.
Re-investing in Innovation: Keep innovating by staying updated on market trends and new products.
Developing Partnerships: Collaborate with other businesses for joint promotional efforts.
Scaling requires strategic planning. Making sure to partner with brands that share similar goals and messages is important. Close monitoring of your financial health, business portrayal and market landscape is essential for success.
Navigating Challenges
The journey of starting a business from scratch has its hurdles. From financial issues to market competition, challenges will arise. However, perseverance and adaptability are key to overcoming these obstacles.
Stay focused on your long-term goals. Learn from setbacks, and take the time to celebrate small victories to maintain your motivation. Statistics show that 70% of businesses that adapt to challenges are more likely to survive.
